Vision on Organization's Development by Marta Barandiy 15/05/2015
Why there is always need of another NGO?Why Ukrainians cannot just unite into one NGO? Because we are united in diversity of our ideas! If the person feels that he or she shall establish new organization – do it! More Ukrainian organizations equal to more Ukrainian persons abroad (even if its legal person). Pluralism of organizations and movements creates space for competition in a positive sense. The negative sense of competition can be diminished by the partnership and work-together because all of us have one goal. Training and seminars, common conferences and workshops, parties and other events teach us to respect each other. The result of pluralism is creativity. Creativity is our strength! We should know about each other and know what are general priorities for each organization to see where we can cooperate but there is no need to unite all in one.
What role has ethics in relationship between Ukrainian communities (organizations, activists)? Ethics is about motivation and respect. Idea, arisen and discussed by the members within the organization whereas actions are taken within the organization is property of the organization. None can privatize this idea or action or attribute it to another organization or activist. Respect and understanding can be achieved by team building activities, training to trust each other and avoid jealousy, honest 1 to 1 conversation etc.
Can persons who belong to other organizations or work for other organization become Board members of the NGO? No. Because the “Conflict of interest” within the Board should be avoided. Because the Board members have access to the full information, they decide about priorities and if their project within another organization is higher priority for them, they will put the project of the given organization on the lower scale. This can endanger the development of this organization.
Why is it important to follow the rules? Because they secure transparency, reliability, realization of expectations, predictable result, and consequent behavior. It is important to stay official in the relationships with others. We act on behalf of the organization that should stay even after we leave. When we quit our membership or volunteering the added value we bring into the organization stays in the organization. The new generations continue the cause.
Is Promote Ukraine an organization of diaspora? No. It is a platform for Ukrainians in Ukraine and abroad as well for Friends of Ukraine. It could be seen as PR-agency for Ukraine
Why should Promote Ukraine be a platform for self-realization of Ukrainians? Promote Ukraine is an open initiative. Its goal is higher than the goal related to one person (as in all the NGOs). The range of projects is as wide as you can imagine: legal, economic, artistic, cultural etc. Anything what improves image of Ukraine is welcome! You want to try consultancy or event management? Or you want or try yourself in editing videos or writing articles? Whatever your skill is you can apply it or develop new skills during project management within the organization. New skills, new knowledge and satisfaction from doing good deed leads to success also in private life. And successful people means successful community means successful country. We are planning training to learn support each other also and private or professional life. At last anyone can initiate event or project. It should be supported. We want to see our people – Ukrainians – up! Those Ukrainians who are already up, can also join and help others develop to their level.
What do members get? Members get added value from organization: experience, contacts, self-realization, attitude and growth. Apart from that in some countries state proposes some extra advantages to the NGOs, like subsidies, grants, and reductions to museums etc.
What does the business project of Promote Ukraine “Ukraine B2B” mean? Is PU involved in business? The most important pillar of the state’s successful image is its economy. The economy of the country is its business, especially SMEs. We understand the immediate link between success of UA SMEs and image of our country. Why shall we concentrate on SMEs only? Big companies have already established success. Their shareholders have good contacts to lobby their business. SMEs – the biggest part of the UA economy but in most of the cases they cannot afford lobbies. Having knowledge, language skills, contacts and will we can advance business opportunities for Ukraine. NPO does not lose its non-profit status because: “Promoting business is not doing business” .
So, PU is more business project or charity project? PU is not a business project as such. We promote Ukrainian business for the benefit of the country. We do it on the base of voluntary donations. There where we have to pay fees for the participation we ask involved companies to cover the fees. It can be as low as 10% of general costs we pay.
Why do you keep administrative fee from charitable events? Because we want sustainable organization with a sustainable result. As a separate legal person NGO has its expenses. They often cannot be covered only with membership fees. Grants also do not cover the administrative part of the NGO. But the invoice for the web site, bank account maintenance, flyers, participation fees in forums and festivals, organization of training for continuous improvement etc. also have to be paid. Therefore stable % on the turnover has to be kept by the NGO.
Why do you support charitable organizations in Ukraine and not providing charity to the private people like all other Ukrainian organizations abroad do? It is important to empower those who is already doing good deed. They have to have motivation and back-up. When we know our partners we also know where the benefit goes. We can check it. These organizations are on spot and know the needs better than us. (to enhance effect, charitable organizations are civil society, people will know that they can ask help from these organizations. We cannot secure that all or even the majority get help from us but those organizations have institutes, people, ideas, they can cooperate with other organizations and with government, initiate reforms also in the field of health being). We support projects with long-term development!
Do you donate to support army of Ukraine in times of ATO? No. Support to military is state's task.
Why do you support “give-and-take” approach in developing organization instead of doing things on goodwill basis? Because if we do not take we cannot give! Acts of goodwill in the organization is mainly charity.
