Home for Ukraine in EU Quarter

Three weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola inaugurated a new “Ukrainian Hub” in Brussels’ EU quarter that will be used by Ukrainian civil society to coordinate help and host events like press conferences and exhibitions, POLITICO’S Camille Gijs writes.

“We have decided to open our house, our home to the Ukrainian civil society,” Metsola said, speaking at Place du Luxembourg. She added that this “concrete gesture” from the Parliament will allow civil society “to coordinate and to help Ukrainians fleeing from war, to help also those brave Ukrainians who are fighting the war at home.”

In practice: The hub will be used as a “communication platform for Ukrainian resistance and European support,” according to Marta Barandiy, chairwoman of Promote Ukraine, one of the civil society groups taking part in the project.

With an estimated 200,000 Ukrainian refugees expected to come to Belgium, the hub will also match Ukrainians looking for help and volunteers who want to offer shelter or goods. A center gathering all logistical support will be operational as of Monday at Rue d’Arlon 53.
