The Ukrainian activists encouraged the theatre management to take such a step with open letters and protests against the Russian opera season in wartime.
Amid the war last March, the Royal Theatre of Belgium announced its intention to make Russian opera a highlight of its 2022-23 season. “Just as during Brexit, we focused on British works, now a prominent place is dedicated to Russian ones,” said the announcement on their website.
Yana Brovdiy then launched an advocacy campaign in the media – with an open letter and rallies organised by Promote Ukraine.
