23 of September at 17:00, we wait for you in front of the La Monnaie / De Munt to protest against the Russian season‼️

As a collective of Belgian, Ukrainian, and European citizens, we were shocked to find out that La Monnaie has decided to feature Russian titles prominently in its 2022-23 season.
We are aware of the status of La Monnaie in the Belgian cultural landscape. This institution is one that prides itself on its professional excellence as well as its humanist perspective.
However, we are convinced that this season is a mistake!
How can we be putting Russian culture in the center when so many Ukrainian cultural institutions have been destroyed, and Ukrainian artists are left without work and prospects for the future? As of 12 September, UNESCO has verified damage to 189 sites since 24 February – 80 religious sites, 13 museums, 36 historic buildings, 33 buildings dedicated to cultural activities, 17 monuments, 10 libraries.

‼️ Therefore, we are organising a protest to raise awareness of the public who will be participating in the Russian title “Pikovaya Dama” about the atrocities committed by the Russian Federation against Ukrainian culture and its people‼️

“We are here to make art, not war” – writes Director of La Monnaie, Peter de Caluwe.
We invite him to reflect on this reality both intellectually and morally – knowing full well his responsibilities to the audience, various stakeholders, employees – and to answer the questions:
• How do the activities of the institution he leads reinforce the message of the imperialist aggressor?
• How do we treat the victims of those aggressions?
• How do we give voice to the oppressed?

This would be a worthy cause for an institution, instead of organising a season of Russian titles, whose history is longer than that of the Belgian state and that stands for liberty and self-determination.

WHEN: 23 of September at 17:00
WHERE: in front of the La Monnaie / De Munt, Brussels
WHAT: protest against the Russian season in the theater!
