The book “Ukraine Vis-à-Vis Russia and the EU. Misperceptions of Foreign Challenges in Times of War, 2014–2015” is based on doctoral research by Dr. Alina Nychyk.

The project aimed to investigate Ukraine’s foreign policy in the country’s relations with the EU and Russia during the first year of the Russian-Ukrainian war, in 2014-2015. The author applied game theory approach to decision-making in foreign policy and conducted 38 elite interviews with policy-makers from the EU, Ukraine, and Russia.

The findings showed multiple misperceptions in EU-Ukraine-Russia relations. For example, Ukrainian politicians expected that the EU would support Ukraine militarily and accept its quick accession to the EU after Euromaidan, European Union’s indecisiveness and slowness in its Ukraine and Russia policies.

Book presentation

Interestingly, some peculiarities of EU-Ukraine-Russia relations and Ukraine’s foreign policy persisted also during 2022 Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while other things changed substantially. Yet going back to the first year of this war shows us how conflicting moments, misunderstandings, and wrong policies were developing and brought finally to the biggest war on the European continent since World War II.

During the event, you will have an opportunity to buy the book and discuss the above-mentioned topics with the author.
