DEAllied Chiefs of Defence held an extraordinary online meeting to discuss the security challenges facing NATO, including the build-up of Russian troops on Ukraine’s border and in the temporarily occupied Crimea.
The Supreme Allied Commander Europe briefed the Military Committee, as did the Assistant Secretary General for Intelligence and Security, reads the statement released on NATO website.
“The Chiefs of Defence exchanged information to obtain a collective understanding in order to bolster the deterrence and defence posture of the Alliance. The goal of the meeting was to promote transparency amongst Allies and to align ongoing national and Allied activities,” the statement underscores.
At NATO reports, the meeting of Allied Chiefs of Defence was extraordinary.
“We discussed the situation around the borders of Ukraine, but not only that. The task was to assess the situation in a broader context because if we focus on only one topic of [Russia’s] military build-up around Ukraine, we can miss other important details,” the official representative of the Alliance commented.
He stressed that the virtual meeting of NATO military leaders was in no way related to preparations for talks between U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
