On 29 January, Ukraine commemorated the heroes of Kruty, the Ukrainian students who stopped the Bolshevik offensive on Kyiv in 1918 at the cost of their lives.

On 29 January 1918, 500 Ukrainian soldiers tried to hold off a 4,000-strong Bolshevik army.

The battle lasted for about six hours, and up to 100 Ukrainians were killed, the youngest being 16. The enemy was delayed for four days, and the UPR managed to sign the Brest Peace with the Quadruple Alliance, which meant international recognition of the UPR’s independence.
