President Zelensky: Only NATO Membership Can Save Ukraine

Today, Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance is the only chance to preserve Ukraine and guarantee security in the region, the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated this in his interview for HARDtalk.

“We have a powerful 200 the army, and we update armament. But this is not enough. The only chance, I tell this to both the United States and the EU, if you do not want to lose Ukraine, you have to support it. NATO membership is a core signal to the Russian Federation, and it is the most important support, ” Zelensky said.

He also added that he did not consider the prospect of Ukraine’s membership in NATO a fantasy.

“The war between Ukraine and Russia was also fantastic. Nobody believed in it. We had families, the countries lived side by side, respected each other. And now we have a war and hatred. Ukrainians do not want to communicate with Russians. Therefore, if someone says that NATO is fantastic, well, let’s see,” said the president of Ukraine.

Zelensky also stated that he had repeatedly told Russian President Vladimir Putin about the impossibility of amending the Constitution of Ukraine, which Moscow demands regarding the special status of Donbas.

At the same time, he expressed confidence that a peace agreement with Putin on the return of all Ukrainian territories, including Crimea, could be reached.

“I believe in this. Otherwise, I would not have gone to the presidency. It is very complicated. And we need the help of the whole world,’ the president stated and added, “If I cannot end the war, then we need another person to come who can finish this tragic story between our countries.”

To recap, earlier the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine had declared that the situation in Donbas would not be an obstacle to our state membership in NATO.
