The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on establishing a mechanism for the payment of Russian reparations for the war in Ukraine. The draft resolution was prepared by Ukraine and co-sponsored by about 50 nations.

Ninety-four countries voted for the resolution. Fourteen voted against, and 73 abstained. In particular, Russia, Belarus, Syria, Iran, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Eritrea, and China voted against it.

“From the liberation victory in Kherson to the diplomatic victory in New York, the UN General Assembly has just given the green light to the creation of a compensation mechanism for Russian crimes in Ukraine. The aggressor will pay for what he did!” said President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky reacting to reparations for Ukraine.

As a reminder, the authorities intend to restore Ukraine, which has suffered colossal destruction as a result of the military aggression of the Russian Federation, primarily with seized Russian assets. A corresponding statement was made by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
