With the Belgian MP Georges Dallemagne and journalists of LN24 Jean-Pierre Martin, as well as MP Maria Mezentseva, we visited Izyum today.

Out of 47,000 habitants, only 20,000 still live here. The mayor of the heavily damaged, de-occupied town, Valeriy Marchenko (in the photo – in the middle), shared the story of his struggle to reconstruct the town and rebuild a community of people for whom this place has been their only home. One day the town will shine again, yet the 1,000 Izyumans who were cruelly killed by Russians will never see it anymore. Despite the pain of memories, life goes on, and people learn to smile again.
