Two U.S. Senate Democrats urged U.S. President Joe Biden to apply all his diplomatic weight to stop the construction of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Robert Menendez and Jeanne Shaheen asked to speed up the imposition of sanctions over the pipeline. This is stated in an official letter from lawmakers, joined by an additional two dozen Senators, addressed to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

“The Trump Administration failed to permanently stop this pipeline, and for almost four years never used the sanctions tools available to do so, so we appreciate your leadership during this critical period as the pipeline is close to completion,” the Senators noted.

So far, the U.S. Department of State has not commented on the demands of President Biden’s fellow party members.

As a reminder, the construction of Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is underway with about 95% of the pipes already laid under the Baltic Sea. The works are currently being carried out off the coast of the Danish island of Bornholm.
