Brussels Airlines might be renationalised

The group of high-level experts that deal with saving major Belgian companies thinks that the case with Brussels Airlines is urgent. According to the Belgian TV-channel LN24, one of the options is a renationalization of the airline.

Brussels Airlines, part of the Lufthansa Group, had financial problems before the pandemic. The TV-channel reported about the virtual bankruptcy of the company. It was also said in the report that Lufthansa is facing enormous difficulties, thus it is highly unlikely that the German company will rescue its Belgian subsidiary.

Brussels Airlines has 3500 employees, many other companies depend on it: like Brussels airport and the tourism industry. According to the Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, Brussels Airlines confirmed that it is in talks with the government about possible support that is needed because of the corona crisis. The airline denied bankruptcy and did not specify that they discussed a renationalisation. In the meantime, several EU countries consider nationalization of their airlines, in particular France and Italy.
